The SLC recently participated in SFWMD’s “Xtreme Yard Makeover” project in which a drought stricken yard was converted to a lush, sustainable landscape.
Steps to Creating a Sustainable Landscape:
When planting a new landscape, use native and drought tolerant plant species.
Use fertilizers that are controlled release and do not apply Nitrogen or Phosphorus during the summer rainy months to prevent run-off of nutrients into water ways.
Reduce water consumption by utilizing low-flow, drip or micro-spray irrigation systems and technologies that reduce water loss.
Use environmentally friendly mulch around plantings to retain moisture.
Zone plants by water usage & site compatibility.
